Two of the major goals are to showcase Manly as a destination and introduce festival goers to the all encompassing laid back lifestyle of surfing.

“Both of these goals were achieved with ease. What a glorious event we have created here. The long term dream of having a festival like this, were definitely turned into reality over the four days of the festival. Everyone at Global Surf Industries is completely stoked with the event and already looking forward to 2011” said Mark Kelly from GSI.

Over 60,000 people attended the event over the 4 days, to celebrate the spiritual birthplace of Australian Surfing – Manly Beach!

A fine and sunny all day with light NE winds and slight swell, as the final day for GSI’s Manly Festival of Surfing kicked off! Read more….

Finals for the Rip Curl Queen and King of the Beach was first in the water with Layne Beachley dominating the surf to take out the Queen of the Beach for the second time in a row- promising to compete until she makes it a clean 7 wins! The Rip Curl King of the Beach had the lead change multiple times between Beau Mitchell, Richie Lovett and Nick Riley. After an entertaining stoush Richie Lovett look out the converted yellow rashie with Beau second, Nick third and Blake Levett fourth.

In the spirit of the festival we had friendly surf off for the 4 Pines Brewing Co. Decades of Legends. Gary Birdsall who competed in the 1964 World Titles and Ray Moran jumped on a board, both almost 70 years old. Simon Anderson, Baddy Treloar, Bruce Channon and Nick Carroll showed they certainly haven’t lost it from the old school crew. Then Barton Lynch, Layne Beachley, Jack Enthwhistle and Kingsley Looker from the younger crew all having fun in the sun.

Next we had a display of old hollow timber boards the Old Manly Boatshed’s Tooth-pick Surfboard riding, with displays from Tom Wegener, Matt Fleming, Andrew Callaghan and David Callaghan.

The Quiksilver Air Show was on next with the young grommets showing us the new style of getting airborne with speed and skill and making the jumps look so easy anybody could do them. Young Ben Hamilton pulled the biggest air in this event and Beau Walker runner up.

The GSI Finless Seaglass event was up next with young local Scott Walker taking this one out with Blakey, Jamie Willems and Spencer Hayes in good form as well.

The Wharf Bar Celebrity Surfing exhibition had a variety of competitors from ex World Champions Layne Beachley, Barton Lynch and Damien Hardman to iconic surf industry legends, surfer and shaper Simon Anderson, Baddy, writer Nick Carroll with the addition of 4 x Olympian downhill skiing Steve Lee. For a change of pace we brought in our own politicians of Mike Baird and Tony Abbott. We also through in some TV personalities such as Lochie and Andrew Daddo and Dave and Pete Evans, with the boys having a humorous time in fun little waves to finish off the day.

Overall, the festival was a great success and as the slogan goes “Life is better when you Surf”

Hero Peter “Beatle” Collins will thrill festival goers with his sculptured piece ‘Wave out of Water’ on display during the Festival at Manly Wharf Forecourt udring the festival!

Peter “Beatle” Collins

Title: “Wave out of Water”

Dimensions: 5.5 x 1.6 x 2m high

Materials: Steel, concrete, mesh, sticks

In waves was heard the very first word,

Rhythm rhyme reason in time,

Not straight nor square,

They’re curves that serve,

Transformations artful creation.

Affected cause evokes effect,

Inevitably exact conformation,

Intangible action provokes reaction,

Direct truthful ramification,

Eternally universal emitters transmit,

Musically coded dictations.

Invisibly invincible through all waves slip,

From outer galactic source,0

Fields of synchronicity,

Frequencies beyond infinity,

They force an eclectic course.

Waves process power load in mode,

Pulse dance but matter won’t advance,

Energy progresses, material stresses,

Till recess where waves remain.

Oceans roll inspiring emotion,

Thrive alive pitch pump and surge,

Riders respond senses merged,

Feel zeal of natural verve.

Waves of bliss, tides of sorrow,

Yesterday weighs toll tomorrow,

While illumination flows,

Waves of answers glow,

Yet only colours show,

The increments that we know.

Peter Collins, August, 2010.

We asked Jack McCoy to be a part of this years Manly Festival of Surfing and he not only agreed, but he will be there to introduce the shows. He asked if he could pick 3 programs that he want to share and here is his reply….

“WOW Stoked to be a part of the festival. Let me see, what do I want to come watch also on the big screen.

Well the first would have to be the Green Iguana. I showed it in Hawaii last year at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and it looked so good BIG it will be unreal to share with everyone at the Festival.

We have some extra time before the Harry Potter screening so I’m going to show my award winning short film THE MORNING GLASS. This is the movie I made on the trip to Tahiti with Laird when he rode that wave. I’ve got a interesting story about how I shot that wave and I’ll share that story and TMG film as a curtain raiser before the Iguana.

On Friday night I’m calling for one of my personal favourites, OCCY, The Occumentary. We had so much fun making it and it’s always better seen on the big screen. Can’t wait. We’ll have a few minutes to do a Q&A about the making of the film.

On Saturday I’ve chosen another film of mine, all rockin and little talkin, 9 LIVES. I’ve not seen this film in about 10 years and itchin to see it BIG. Again we’ll have some time on this night also to show THE MORNIG GLASS with the Q & A.

Just want to thank the Manly Festival of Surfing organisers for asking me to share these films and look forward to seeing you all there. Aloha Jack”

Come one, come all. Your chance to see some classic Jack McCoy films on the BIG SCREEN with Jack giving you some behind the scenes interaction!

$10 tickets, 5pm Thursday – Saturday during the festival at Manly Cinemas

Manly is LOVED not only by the locals who live here, the everyday surfers who flock here, but the industries best shapers, film makers, and surfing world champs – past and present.

Our favourite friends attest, as to why this really is ‘God’s Country’ and what they love about Manly the most!

Midget Farrelly

First Australian to win a major surfing title, the 1963 championships in Makaha, Hawaii.

In 1964 he won the inaugural World Surfing Championship at Manly, Australia.

“Nobody expected the crowd of 60,000+ people who attended the 1964 surfing world titles at Manly Beach. As a 19 year old, I could not imagine that this small sport could be so well received in Australia.”

“The event itself kicked off competitive surfing contests world wide and allowed the creation of the international surf federation, which still operates today.”

“Travelling the coast and living the surf lifestyle was a new way of thinking in the 60’s and beyond. The results of that amazing family inclusive lifestyle are the events showcased within the Manly Festival of Surfing.”

“In 40 years, Manly has changed, yet regardless of the developments the ocean and waves are still beautiful and remain the same.”

Nick Carroll

Long time surfer and surfing journalist

“When I think of Manly, my thoughts immediately relate to the birth place of surfing in Australia.

Manly is the first place Australians learnt to enjoy the beach, from daylight swimming to body surfing and board riding.

The Manly Festival of Surfing whole heartedly embraces the wide ranging culture of surfing, from the super hardcore to general recreation.”

Phyllis O’Donell

1964 Women’s Winner. Inaugural World Surfing Championship at Manly

“I went into the event as the 1963 invitational Australian Champion.

As a young girl only 5’2” and riding a 9’ board, I was absolutely thrilled to beat Linda Benson, who was well known for being Gidget’s surf double in the popular 60’s show!

“Manly has and will always be a love of mine…. Snowy McAllister, a local Manly legend, mentored me to become a World Champion!”

Mark Occhilupo

1999 World Champion – Billabong Team Rider

“The thought of Manly instantly brings me memories of fun! Competing in Manly junior events against the likes of Damien Hardman and Barton Lynch, at a beach that is world renowned as the birth place for competitive surfing is unforgettable!”

Bob McTavish

Surfboard innovator and author

“I’m stoked that GSI has stepped up to the plate in driving this great Festival, which is long overdue! Manly IS the birthplace, the spiritual home of surfing in Australia, and at last that powerful fact is recognised and celebrated. The history, the great surf and surfers, the culture, the events all make this Festival awesome!”

Bruce Channon

ex Surfing World owner, Editor Longboarding Australia. Competed in the Juniors at the 64 World Titles.

”As a 13-year-old grommet, I remember getting out of my sick bed to attend, and to surf in the Junior division. I had tonsillitis but there was no way I was going to miss it. Crowd estimates of around 60,000 were given, and sitting there watching the finals on the Sunday I could believe there was that many there. The highlight had to be the surfing of Midget Farrelly in the Mens final. Midget finished off two of his rides with flamboyant, arms-in-the-air cutbacks that had the crowd screaming.

My other highlight was to see my photo in the surfing column of the Sunday paper that day. Of all the great surfers to attend, 13-year-old Bruce Channon had his image selected! No matter that I was weak as a kitten with tonsillitis, and did a face plant on this wave, I was in the Sun Herald on the day of the biggest moment in world surfing to that time.”

Damien Hardman

1987, 1991 World Champion. Rip Curl Store Owner. Manly Local

”Manly beach holds a special place in my heart, not only because I passed it on the way to and from school each day, much to my frustration when the waves were good… but because its where I won my first world title.

Manly provided the perfect setting to decide a world champion at the Coke classic, the waves were great and the crowd was huge.

To win a world title in my home town in front of a home crowd was awesome.”

Layne Beachley

7xWorld Champion, Manly Local

‘I couldn’t think of a better place to host a festival for the sport’.

Tom Carroll

1983 & 1984 World Champion – Quiksilver Team Rider, Manly Local

‘In the early 80’s I had seen Occy surfing, and knew it would be scary the first time I was up against him. I won that first showdown, but at J-Bay in 1984 chasing my second world title, Occy smashed me!

Occy taught and inspired me to move forward with my approach to waves, boards and everything surfing…’

Ritchie Lovett

X Pro Surfer, Manly Local

“Manly Beach represents so much to me. It’s the place where I rode my first wave and its the place I call home to this day. I have so many great memories from growing up as a grommet, surfing all day and watching my heros, guys like Barton Lynch and Robbie Bain, those guys made me want to become a professional surfer. My life has basically revolved around the surf at Manly.”

“The festival will capture the spirit of surfing through everyone involved, they are in fact the spirit of surfing. You can’t artificially build that, its just happens when you bring surfers together.

Joel Parkinson

World Champion, Billabong Team Rider

“I have always loved Manly, it’s a home away from home for me. The beach and the life in and around it is the heartbeat of the place. Whenever I think about being there I think about the great waves, the great food around the corner and most of all a relaxed time with family and friends on that golden sand.”

“I am lucky enough to make a living in surfing – but surfing is not just about the professional tour… any person who has any connection with the water and surf knows this.

The best thing about the Manly Festival of Surfing is the variety of the program and its inclusive nature. There is an event for everyone and when you look at what’s on, you’d be hard pressed not to find something in there that you could get involved in!”

Jean Hay

Manly Mayor

‘We believe this is a really exciting concept – one we had no hesitation in backing’.

Mark Kelly

Global Surf Industries CEO

‘We believe that Life is better when you surf, Manly is living proof of this. If you want to live life come to the Manly Festival of Surfing and see what it is all about.’

Meegan Clancy

Event Organiser

‘The first World Titles were held in Manly in 1964, it’s only fitting for the Festival of Surfing to take place at Manly – The Spiritual Birthplace of Australian Surfing’.

Mike Baird

State MP for Manly

“It is impossible to separate surfing and Manly. Surfing started here, it continues here and it is very much part of the future.

Surfing legends Bernard ‘Midget’ Farrelly, Phyllis O’Donnell and Barton Lynch will be special guests when Manly and Freshwater surf beaches on Sydney’s Northern Beaches are formally declared Australia’s latest National Surfing Reserve in a dedication ceremony taking place on the Beachfront Promenade at North Steyne (near the Ocean Beach House) at 11.30am on Saturday 25 September 2010.

The new Manly- Freshwater National Surfing Reserve stretches over four kilometres from Harbord Point to Fairy Bower and includes Freshwater Beach; Queenscliff, North Steyne and Manly Beaches and Shelly Beach to Fairy Bower Point.

As a National Surfing Reserve, Manly-Freshwater joins an elite group of iconic surfing beaches of intrinsic environmental, heritage, sporting and cultural value to the nation.

The only other National Surfing Reserves in Australia are Maroubra (2006), Angourie (2007), Lennox (2008), Crescent Head (2008), Cronulla (2008), Merewether (2009), Killalea (2009), North Narrabeen (2009), Margaret River (2010) and Kalbarri (2010).Manly hosted the first World Surfboard-riding Championship in 1964, the event being won by ‘Midget’ Farrelly and Phyllis O’Donnell who will unveil two special plaques commemorating the dedication of the Manly- Freshwater National Surfing Reserve.

One plaque will be featured on a special, new sandstone sculpture on Manly Beach by artist Chris Bennetts, the second will be placed near the statue of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku (designed by Barry Donohoo), on the headland overlooking Freshwater Beach.

With its century-long surfing heritage, Manly is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in Australia!Manly was also the site of Australia’s first legal daylight bathing (1902), hosted the first known body surfing contest in 1908, and was the launch site of Australia’s first official surf patrol boat (1907).Freshwater Beach famously played host to Duke Kahanamoku’s board surfing demonstration in the Summer of 1914 – 1915, and is currently home to two world surfing champions, Barton Lynch and Layne Beachley.

Manly Beach is one of Australia’s most popular seaside tourist destinations, attracting some five million visitors from around the world each year. The NSW State Member of Parliament for Manly, Mike Baird, will preside over the dedication ceremony in the presence of The Hon. Tony Kelly, Deputy Leader of the NSW Government in the Legislative Council and Minister for Planning, Infrastructure & Lands; Mayor of Manly, Councillor Jean Hay AM and Mayor of Warringah, Councillor Michael Regan.

“National Surfing Reserves encourage everyone to enjoy, understand and protect special coastal environments of universal value to the surfing world,” said Councillor Hay.

“The dedication of the Manly-Freshwater area as a National Surfing Reserve is a wonderful recognition of the iconic nature of this beautiful stretch of paradise” said Mayor Hay.

“It’s important to note that A Surfing Reserve does not attempt to exclude any user group from the surfing beach. In fact, it ensures that the enjoyment of a reserve is protected and enhanced for generations to come”

Formed in Sydney in 2005, the National Surfing Reserve program is a voluntary collaboration dedicated to recognising iconic surfing sites in Australia and promoting National Surfing Reserve sites globally.

Self funded and non-political, the National Reference Group comprises experienced individuals from across Australia who facilitate National Surfing Reserve nominations and management.
